Interview: Wayne Pretty from Pretty Sweet Lighting
Small things can make a big difference, especially when looking to market a home for sale. Specialist lighting help can make a significant difference to a property’s ambience and overall look and feel. As we plan our own new home, this is something that we have been very mindful of, ensuring that certain high-use areas as well lit, and feature accents are highlighted throughout the house.
I spent time with Wayne Pretty from Pretty Sweet Lighting recently to get his take thoughts on how lighting can transform a home into something really special. Enjoy!
How long have you been involved with the designing lighting in residential homes and commercial properties?
I have been involved in the lighting/electrical industry for over 12 years. I started off as an electrician who was very interested in the way light worked and how lighting could transform spaces. From the very start I had a passion for it. I then went and completed a lighting design qualification at Massey University which, upon finishing about 4 years ago, made me the only qualified/working electrician that also had the design qualification in the South Island at the time (I’m not sure about only the South Island these days, but most definitely Southern Lakes/Otago)!
In your words what is the typical brief for your services you receive?
Pretty Sweet is a qualified electrical company that specialises in lighting design and installation. We work in all areas of the trade – domestic/commercial/industrial. If a client is building a new home then Pretty Sweet can jump in at design stage and totally finalise the lighting and electrical plans.
We really excel at design and installation for bar/cafes and restaurants, where we have the know how to maintain all their electrical equipment with scheduled servicing and maintenance.
What sized projects would you start with and largest size you would do?
Anything, anywhere, anytime. From lighting up the tree in the back garden to lighting up the Empire State building.
Are there other services that Pretty Sweet Lighting offer that property owners and or prospective owners looking to build should know about?
Pretty Sweet supply working electrical designs at the start of a project and afterwards at the end of the project, where the customer receives a comprehensive handover document that is essentially an electrical manual for their new home.
It will include thing such as all manuals for any items installed by Pretty Sweet, a full electrical design and any compliance paper work.
As for lighting we start off with a concept design that helps the customer visualise the ideas that they, and I, have for their project. This eventually turns into a finalised lighting design with 3D renders if needed. As there are no other electrical companies in the area doing anything even close to this, it’s important to us to be able to offer this level of service.
What is the most rewarding part of your role with Pretty Sweet Lighting?
Seeing the ideas that are in my head that have never been done before, turn into a visual art piece for every one to see. The cool thing about lighting is that I can show people only things I want them to see – in the dark an object is nothing until it is lit up and on display.
Are there any significant changes or trends forthcoming in the lighting field that property owners and or prospective owners looking to build should know about?
In the world of lighting, LED products are getting more and more cost effective and more energy efficient. Making LED lighting even more attractive than ever.
What advice would you give potential owners looking to build in regards to lighting?
Put some thought into your spaces. With a well designed and cost effective plan, the areas in your home can have more than one scene. It is not hard to have a living room that is a bright well light area for visual tasks and then…. with the flick of a switch you have a moody ambient space that is great for relaxing or entertaining. With a few hidden lights here and a bit of strip light there….. Boom!….ambiance.
Does Wanaka differ from other NZ regions for your line of work?
Of course. We in the trades are extremely lucky with what is happening in our area at the moment. Things are booming. Wanaka has grown so much even over the 10 years I have been here and it continues to grow at a fast pace. With interesting new architectural designs more common, it has provided some great properties to work on.
Best place to get coffee in Wanaka?
This question is way too hard to answer. I believe the question should be is there a bad place to go for coffee in Wanaka?
What is Wanaka best kept secret?
Dreamramp. I like show my artistic side in my lighting plans, this is also reflected in my passion to skateboard too.
Best advice for people moving to Wanaka?
Wanaka is the best place on Earth.
It’s 10am on a Sunday morning, where would we find you and what are you doing?
Wanaka Skatepark, skating the big bowl.
